The American Thoracic Public Advisory Roundtable (ATS PAR) grew out of an idea proposed in February 2001 by Dr. William J. Martin at a dinner he hosted in Bethesda, Maryland in conjunction with the annual NHLBI-PIO meeting. He presented his idea to seventeen patient groups who were attending the NHLBI-PIO meeting, of forming a group dedicated to providing the patient perspective on pulmonary and critical care medicine. The idea was received with overwhelming support and was the catalyst for the formation of PAR. Today we are fifteen members strong advocating for patients and families affected by respiratory diseases, sleep-related conditions and other related critical illnesses.
