ATS MECOR Faculty Application

Loyal to its tagline, the American Thoracic Society helps the world breathe. For almost 25 years, the ATS has been working to build research capacity in low- and middle-income countries through its Methods in Epidemiologic, Clinical, and Operations Research (MECOR).  This intensive course for physicians and related health care professionals aims to increase capacity and leadership in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine research beyond its US borders and US membership.

This spring, the ATS launched MECOR 2.0, which includes a ground-up redesign of the curriculum, course organization, and faculty/mentorship opportunities. The updated program capitalizes and builds upon the program’s extensive experience and expertise. The curriculum utilizes a “flipped classroom” teaching model with seminar style classroom sessions and a focus on one to one instruction with a learning management system for students, faculty, and alumni (CANVAS).

Since its initiation in 1994, the scope of the ATS MECOR program has grown tremendously. Today, its footprint is truly global with more than 1800 graduates from its global network of courses.  Courses and partners include the Pan African Thoracic Society in Africa, the Chinese Thoracic Society in China, the US Centers for Disease Control and the Indian Council for Medical Research in India, the Indonesian Society for Respirology in Indonesia, the Turkish Thoracic Society in the Mediterranean, the Latin American Thoracic Society in Latin American, and the Vietnamese National TB Program and the University of Sydney in Southeast Asia.

Welcome to MECOR 2.0, the process for faculty recruitment and retention is currently underway and will be ongoing.  We are seeking online applications from active ATS Members who would like to join the MECOR team by becoming an ATS MECOR Faculty member.  The ideal applicant for a MECOR Faculty position would be an applicant who has a demonstrated experience in teaching, research and mentorship.

Example of MECOR 2.0 Level 1 Syllabus

There are two categories of MECOR Faculty: Course Faculty who will be present on-site during the MECOR courses and engage in faculty-to-student instruction both inside of the classroom and online prior to the course, and Project Mentors who will be matched to individual students.  Service as MECOR Faculty should ideally be viewed as an opportunity that is aligned with one’s career path.

Course Faculty:  members will participate in all on-site MECOR course activities within a specific program (Country/region) and guide individual students at whatever stage they are within the MECOR program.  Click below to see a sample course syllabus.

Project Mentors:  are accepted applicants who have expertise in a mentee’s area of research and guide an individual student specifically focused on their research project related activities.  Project Mentors will have the option of taking one more than one mentee. The Project Mentors will supervise the completion of a defined, time-limited project, i.e. data collection, data analysis and manuscript preparation and help their mentee with planning for funding and /or additional training.

PROVISONAL CRITERIA:
