Year in Advocacy: 2017

In 2017, the ATS secured a number of achievements including:

  • First ever ATS Rally on Capitol Hill where over 200 ATS members made a visual statement for respiratory health

  • Funding increases for the National Institutes of Health, VA Research Program and global TB control programs

  • Prevented legislative riders from limiting FDA’s authority to regulate tobacco products and EPA’s authority to regulate air pollution

The election brought about new priorities with a new Congress and Administration.  The ATS advocacy program worked to communicate to Congress and the White House our strong opposition to:

  • Repeal of the Affordable Care Act

  • Administration’s proposal to cut NIH funding

  • Administration’s proposal to cut EPA funding

  • Administration’s proposal to cut CDC funding

  • Administration’s proposal to cut VA research funding

  • A delay in implementation of the ozone standard

Where Congressional and Administration efforts were insufficient, the ATS sought relief from the courts to preserve policies that protect the respiratory health of our patients including:

  • Filed an amicus brief in support of OSHA’s revised silica exposure standard
  • Filed an amicus brief in support of EPA’s ozone standard
  • Filed an amicus brief in support of EPA’s rule to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • Filed an amicus brief in support of EPA’s rule to reduce mercury and air toxic emissions
  • Filed an amicus brief in support of EPA’s rule to reduce cross state air pollution
